Nan: Medical Educator & Mom
What’s in Your Bag?
We’re excited to introduce Nan, a dedicated educator from Northeastern China who has devoted over 30 years to shaping the future of medical professionals. Her students, who deeply admire her, often return to visit or call her on special occasions, reflecting the profound impact she has made.
Nan’s daughter Zhurui, a fan of The Good Doctor, first spotted the MotoChic Lauren Bag on the show and later found it on Instagram, where Christina Chang, who plays Dr. Audrey Lim, had featured it. Zhurui thought the bag would be perfect for her mom, a dedicated medical educator in Northeastern China, and used her first paycheck to buy it as a thoughtful gift. As Zhurui shared “Now, this bag really didn’t disappoint us. My mom loves the reflective stripes and the big space inside; it can be carried on the back as well as in the hand, and the quality is great too.”
Read on to learn more about Nan’s inspiring journey and how the MotoChic Lauren bag fits seamlessly into her daily life, as told by Zhurui.
My mom’s name is Nan, she is from Northeastern China and is currently a teacher at a medical school. Her parents were doctors, so under their influence, she went to medical school. Later on, to spend more time with me, she chose to stay at the medical school and become a teacher, mainly teaching pharmacology and functionality, as well as some lab classes. This marks her 30th year of teaching. She enjoys educating students because she feels it gives her a sense of fulfillment that keeps her young at heart. I didn’t understand this when I was younger and thought it took away from the time she should be spending with her family, but she told me that her students were going to be doctors, and if she didn’t teach them well, patients would lose their lives. (I remember in The Good Doctor, Dr. Lim said something similar: “If you don’t train them well, people will die.”)
Her love and dedication are why her students love her. Since I can remember, students who have graduated often think of her and call her on New Year’s holidays and come back to the school to see her when they have time. I admire my mom and am proud of her; it can be easy to do a job but very difficult to stick to it for thirty years. If I have the chance to become a teacher, I want to be like my mom.
In my mom’s free time, she likes to work out. She used to be the second setter of the school volleyball team, and she taught me how to play volleyball, but I’m nowhere near as good as she is. She was also very good at sprinting and used to place in the school sports meet for many years in a row. In the last few years, she has taken up less strenuous sports such as swimming and badminton, and if she isn’t busy on weekends she enjoys hiking.
As an educator, she’s typically carrying her handouts, textbooks, notebooks, pens, laptop, white coat, water bottle, cell phone, keys, and faculty card in her Lauren Bag.
The Lauren Bag is very versatile and suitable for all occasions, whether it’s for going to the classroom, the gym or hiking. It can be used as both a backpack and a handbag, so you can carry it on your back to free your hands. The interior is spacious enough to accommodate my mom’s laptop, handouts, and textbooks, with a separate compartment for the laptop. There are buckles on both sides of the bag so that if she doesn’t have too much stuff in it, she can close the buckles to compress the space, which is a very ingenious design. Additionally, the reflective material makes it easy and safer to be seen, especially when she comes back from hiking in the dark. And there are enough pockets inside this bag to put some small things, such as pens, lip balm, data cables, and so on.
